Masterclass - Living the Light and Brain, perception and filmmaking

Join us on Sunday October 28. from 10 – 16.30 where we, in collaboration with Dansk Filmfotograf Forbund (DFF), have arranged 2 very different masterclasses.

From 10.00 – 12.30 director and cinematographer Claire Pijman NSC from Holland will show her documentary Living the Light, an intimate look at the cameraman who shot Down by Law, Breaking the Waves and Paris, Texas.
The late Dutch cinematographer Robby Müller "had a permanent influence on the film language overall," and his low-tech, innovative style and expressive use of light — on display in such ground-breaking art house features as Paris, Texas, Down by Law and Breaking the Waves, inspired a generation of filmmakers.

Claire Pijman's documentary Living the Light – Robby Müller, finished shortly before Müller's death earlier this year, promises an intimate look at the man and his art, seen from his own perspective and those who knew him best. Claire Pijman had access to his personal archive to create an extraordinary film essay.
The film premiered at Venice International Film Festival on Sept. 4, 2018.

Claire Pijman will introduce the film (duration 1:28) and afterwards hold a Q & A.

After lunch we will continue with Elen Lotman ESC "Brain, perception and filmmaking” - “what knowledge gained from cognitive neuroscience and science of perception can teach us about filmmaking."
Elen Lotman graduated from Baltic Film and Media School with BA in cinematography and has shot numerous documentaries, shorts and feature films. Since 2005 Elen has been teaching cinematography at Baltic Film and Media School, in 2013 she became the head of Film Department and since 2015 Head of Arts Study Area. Her PhD research focuses on aspects of human perception and cinematography.
She is a President of Estonian Society of Cinematographers (ESC) and Member of the Board of IMAGO, European Federation of Cinematographers.
